Changes to Hazardous Waste Regime

The Environment Agency (EA) has confirmed that premises in England producing more than 500kg a year of hazardous waste will no longer have to register.

From 1 April, companies will indicate their business name in the consignment note code instead of a premises or exempt code.

The changes do not affect Wales, where businesses will still be required to register with Natural Resources Wales.

A Q&A document from the EA, published here, says Defra introduced the change as part of its Smarter Environmental Regulation Review (Serr).

The document says: “Businesses that produce or store hazardous waste will benefit, the savings being both in registration fees and in administration time. The Government asked us to find a solution to enable traceability of waste movements solely on the basis on the information sent in the consignee returns.”

The parts of the regulations that affect mobile services are also being revoked so the producer of the waste should use their company details to form the first six characters of the consignment note code.
